About Me
Hi! I'm Alex
and I am a current high school junior interested in the GIP program. Currently, I am in proficient in Spanish and conversational in Mandarin. One PolyGlobal course that I am taking is AP Spanish, and another PolyGlobal course that I plan to take next year is Pursuit of Happiness. I have yet to participate in any PolyGlobal travel program, but I Iook foward to hosting Finnish and Japanese students in the future. As of now, I do not have any concrete ideas about my capstone project, but one Global issue that I am interested in is the ongoing conflict between Taiwan and China. As my first blog post, I would like to share my personal statement delcaring my interest in the Global Scholars program:

My interest in the Global Scholars program was sparked in my freshman year when I attended my first PolyGlobal event: Dr. Maria Carreira on America’s Newest Children. Although I initially attended this event for extra credit in my Spanish II class, Dr. Carreira’s message about the dwindling number of Heritage Speakers alongside the growing number of professions that require people who speak multiple languages struck me as extremely meaningful and motivated me to pursue my own Heritage Language, Mandarin, by enrolling in the Mandarin course at Poly this year. Some experiences that will empower my ability to lead PolyGlobal at Poly are my leadership roles as an ASB cabinet member, previous class president, and baseball team captain. I hope that the Global Scholars program will expand and deepen my global perspectives by both delving further into global issues and topics that were covered in PolyGlobal events and introducing more global issues. Furthermore, the Global Scholars program will help me gain the ability to better utilize my capabilities of speaking three languages in a global context. Finally, the Global Scholars program will expand my global horizons and be a monumental step toward becoming a global citizen.
